A record number of people are seeking assistance from the National Debt Helpline, with a coordinator saying being employed “is no longer the financial security that it used to be”.
Financial counsellor Peter Gantley said people could be under debt pressure regardless of their income, employment or family status.
Some of the people who sought financial help from him included a single parent with thousands in unpaid utility bills, a former business owner with outstanding tax debts, and a health care worker who was in mortgage arrears after they recently stopped working due to poor mental health.
