CHICAGO (WLS) — The abuse survivors of domestic violence suffer does not always end when they leave their partner. Those forced to take out loans or credit cards, coerced into debt, endure years of financial hardship. Now there is new legislation designed to provide stronger legal protection to survivors, making sure they’re not responsible to pay back the debt they were manipulated into taking on.
“Financial abuse is very real,” Republican Illinois State Representative Nicole La Ha told the ABC7 I-Team.
