FRANKFORT, Ky. — More than 130,000 Kentuckians are expected to have a combined $250 million in medical debt erased through a new state program announced Tuesday by Gov. Andy Beshear.
Beshear signed an executive order establishing the Team Kentucky Medical Debt Relief Program and directing $2.5 million to Undue Medical Debt, a national nonprofit that purchases qualifying medical debt from participating hospitals and collection agencies and then eliminates it.
The arrangement is expected to erase approximately $100 in medical debt for every $1 spent by the state.
