An Australian hall of fame poker player has lost a court case over $48,000 in alleged betting debts owed to him, after being found to have acted as an unlicensed bookie.
Gary Benson, who has racked up US$2.8 million ($3.9 million) in winnings on the world’s card tables, last year launched legal action against two fellow professional poker players in NSW Local Court.

The court heard Benson and Michael O’Grady had a “prolonged wagering relationship” over texts involving “a series of betting transactions which extended well beyond isolated wagers and resulted in the accumulation of significant liabilities said to be owing by Mr O’Grady”.
