Labour’s latest election Policy speaks directly to a concern that is felt in kitchens, clinics, classrooms and workplaces across the country: many young New Zealanders complete their studies with valuable qualifications but begin adult life carrying debts that delay saving, home ownership and family plans.
At its Campaign Launch, Labour Leader Chris Hipkins proposed that eligible New Zealand-based borrowers would have 10% of their outstanding student-loan balance written off.
For people who have already completed their studies and remain up to date with their obligations, the reduction would occur on April 1, 2027, should Labour form the next government.
