Staging a kidnapping may seem like an unlikely way to solve a personal problem, but people have done so for reasons ranging from gambling debt and relationship disputes to evading accountability for missing money.
Since the start of this month, reports have surfaced of incidents in Limpopo and Gauteng.
In Kwa-Thema, a 37-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday (October 20) for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort R40 000 from her cousin.
According to a report by The Witness, she was arrested alongside an accomplice by Kwa-Thema detectives, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Crime Intelligence.
