Nearly 27,000 Kansans are slated to receive notices beginning the week of October 19 that their medical bills have been forgiven. Somos Votantes Education Fund said it purchased more than $42 million in medical debt for the effort, and recipients do not have to apply, according to The Beacon and Yahoo News.
The scale reported for the effort shifted during October. On October 5, the Kansas Reflector described a plan to cancel nearly $34 million for 21,490 people. Later, The Beacon reported 26,926 recipients. The published accounts do not explain the changed totals, so they should be understood as figures reported at different points—not as a reconciled account of how the program expanded.
