ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – State lawmakers are weighing a bill that supporters say would offer student debt relief for Alaskans who return home to teach or work for the state.
“House Bill 28 is about helping to solve our out-migration problems, encouraging skilled workers, former Alaskans to come back,” Rep. Andi Story, D-Juneau, Democrat who introduced the proposal.
A similar student debt repayment program is already in place for Alaska’s medical professionals.
If passed, HB 28 would establish a pilot student loan repayment program allowing up to 125 grants for returning teachers and state workers.
Beneficiaries would receive $8,000 a year for up to three years, funded by the Higher Education Investment Fund (HEIF).
