About 1 in 6 Hoosier families have medical debt in collections. A bill that hopes to help them has bipartisan support in the Indiana senate.
INDIANAPOLIS — A bipartisan bill at the Indiana Statehouse would take steps to try and deal with Indiana’s medical debt problem.
According to the Baker Institute at Rice University, 16% of Indiana families have medical debt in collections. In some rural counties that number is as high as 28%.
The problem hits communities of color particularly hard, with one in four families reporting medical debt in collections.
