Brazil’s Ministry of Agrarian Development plans to launch a new debt relief program this February to help small farmers and agrarian reform settlers regain financial stability. The initiative, which aims to restructure or write off outstanding debts, will cover more than 943,000 producers whose combined liabilities exceed R$19.5 billion.
The program will target debts that have been overdue for more than a year, including those registered in the federal government’s debt portfolio as delinquent debt and losses recorded in constitutional financing funds, the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture (PRONAF), land credit programs, and settlement installation credit.
