In his letter, Cardinal Ameyu paints a grim picture of the humanitarian situation in the world’s youngest nation, saying, “I write to you with a heart carrying the reality that our people face today. Nearly 10 million South Sudanese need humanitarian assistance.”
He says that severe flooding this year has displaced an estimated one million people, worsening food insecurity and malnutrition across the country.
“Alongside all of this is the burden of external debt. Years of instability forced our nation to borrow in order to function,” Cardinal Ameyu says in the letter.
