WASHINGTON (KTAL/KMSS) — A federal appeals court has cleared the way for about $23 billion in student loan relief for more than 500,000 borrowers who said they were misled or defrauded by their colleges.

The ruling allows a long-running settlement to move forward after the U.S. Department of Education tried to delay it.
Borrowers who qualify could have their federal student loans canceled, receive refunds for some payments they already made and have their credit records updated. The decision also gives automatic relief to more than 170,000 additional borrowers whose applications were not processed on time.
