The future of a UK seaside town’s pier has been thrown into serious doubt after its operating company was forced into compulsory liquidation following a court order.
Eastbourne Pier, which opened in 1870, is a famous Grade II listed Victorian landmark that helps attract thousands of tourists to the resort every year. As well as its traditional architecture, the pier is known for its seaside attractions, such as amusement arcades, traditional fish and chips shops, and tearooms. It has also featured in films including Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, and Brighton Rock. In 1997, the attraction won the National Piers Society’s first-ever “Pier of the Year” award.
