Australian Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson has lost a court battle over almost A$50,000 in gambling debts, but the circumstances behind the ruling make this more interesting than a simple case of one gambler refusing to pay another.
Benson, Australia’s first-ever World Series of Poker bracelet winner, went to court seeking to enforce a debt owed by fellow poker player Michael O’Grady following an extensive private sports betting arrangement between the pair.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the Downing Centre Local Court ultimately ruled against Benson.
Not because the court determined that O’Grady hadn’t placed the bets. Not because Benson had fabricated the amount owed….
