On Monday, Governor Josh Stein made an announcement that changes the financial landscape for many North Carolinians struggling to pay off their medical bills.
“Over the past year, more than 2.5 million North Carolinians have seen their medical debt erased. That’s more than $6.5 billion wiped clean,” said North Carolina Governor Josh Stein.
The state has partnered with all 99 hospitals in North Carolina to help make this happen through the state’s new medical debt relief program.
Hospitals that agree to forgive old medical debt can receive extra funding through Medicaid.
The program targets people who’ve struggled for years, many on Medicaid or living close to the poverty line.
Here in the triad, the impact is enormous.
