Mr Reeves said he had only a vague memory of people knocking on his door in 2016 “and talking about a free laptop” which he didn’t receive.
“When I did my tax last year I found out I had a debt of $75,000,” he said. “I was devastated. I thought, ‘How is this possible and how am I going to fix this’.”
When Mr Reeves was approached in 2016 he was reliant on a pension as his sick mother’s carer. She died in 2018.
Legal Aid NSW made submissions to the VET Student Loan Ombudsman in the Commonwealth Ombudsman’s office on Mr Reeves’ behalf and the Department of Education, Skills and Employment waived the $75,000 debt. He will also receive a refund of $523.92 which he had already paid.
