Student loan debt is the norm for Augustana University junior Lydia Simmons.
“I don’t know anybody that’s coming out of college without loans,” Simmons said.
The 20-year-old philosophy, Spanish and music student’s plans on owing $15,000 after she graduates, which is about half of what the average South Dakota graduate will owe, according to a 2016 report from The Institute for College Access and Success (TICAS).
Simmons has been proactive in understanding what impact those loans will have on her, but she admits that when it comes to student loan debt, financial literacy is difficult to attain.
