SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KFVS) – On Tuesday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced that more than $1.1 billion worth of medical debt has been erased through the state’s Medical Debt Relief Program.
More than 500,000 Illinoisans in every county have had their medical debt forgiven through the program.
“In Illinois, we believe healthcare is a human right — and affordability is central to that promise,” said Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. “No one should ever delay care because of cost or face financial ruin simply because they got sick.
Gov. Pritzker’s office reported that people who have received relief have had more than $1,200 in debt eliminated, on average. One individual received more than $300,000 in debt relief.
