Msunduzi Municipality has launched a major debt relief programme offering qualifying residents and businesses discounts of up to 50% on outstanding municipal debt in a bid to improve revenue collection and ease financial pressure on consumers.
The municipality’s #RandForRand discount campaign, which runs from May 1 to December 31, 2026, has, however, drawn mixed reactions, with some civic groups warning that such incentives reward non-payment while municipal officials argue they provide a lifeline to struggling households and businesses.
