The NRL’s top referee Ashley Klein has revealed he had a serious gambling problem, with the league confirming it first became aware of the issue seven years ago.

Klein, who will officiate Wednesday’s State of Origin game, said in a statement to The Sydney Morning Herald that he “developed a problem with gambling on horse racing and greyhound racing”.
