Pay-and-take day approaches for Matt Bowyer, the high-rolling illegal bookmaker who accepted millions of dollars in bets from the former interpreter of superstar baseball player Shohei Ohtani.
Bowyer, now 49, is scheduled to plead guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to operating an illegal gambling business, money laundering and filing a false tax return. When he’s eventually sentenced, no one should reasonably expect he will receive a lot of prison time, but taken separately, the felonies carry sentences totaling 18 years.
