ASHLAND, Ore. — Students at Southern Oregon University say something has to be done to address student debt.
Through Senate Bill 1034, Oregon lawmakers are considering a way for residents to deduct the total amount of interest and principal paid on loans throughout the year from their state taxable income. Carolyn Stone said for those getting a master’s degree like her, this could be a solution.
“You can go to school and rack up all this debt. But when you get out jobs don’t necessarily pay as much as we need to pay those debts off. And so you can get stuck between a rock and a hard place,” Stone said.
SOU students said they don’t know anyone who doesn’t rely on loans.
