More San Diego families are seeking help with credit card debt as rising household expenses make it increasingly difficult to keep up with monthly payments, according to data from a nonprofit financial counseling agency.
Money Management International, or MMI, said about 1,000 San Diegans sought its help in 2025, nearly 30% more than the 780 clients the nonprofit reported in 2024. Those clients reported average credit card debt of $34,900 in 2025, a 52% increase from $23,000 in 2019.
Their average monthly household expenses also climbed from $3,600 in 2019 to $5,000 in 2025, an increase of 39%.
