Britain is exploring options to pay a historical debt of about £450 million to Iran that could help free the jailed British mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
The foreign secretary and the chancellor have authorised government lawyers to examine how to settle a 38-year-long dispute, according to reports. The ministry of defence had struck an agreement to supply 1,500 Chieftain tanks to Iran in the 1970s but halted the deal as the revolution that overthrew the Shah erupted.
