The excitement of major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup is encouraging more South Africans to try sports betting, but a personal finance expert says the dream of a big win can quickly become a financial problem.
Laura du Preez, Editor of Smart About Money, said many people are drawn into sports betting because of emotion, advertising and the hope of instant financial rewards.
She warned that while small bets may appear harmless, repeated losses can leave people financially worse off, especially if they are gambling with money needed for essential expenses.
