NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — Veterinarians in rural New Mexico are getting some extra help this year with their student loan debt. Eight vets across the state will each receive up to $80,000 in debt relief from the New Mexico Higher Education Department, specifically for those who commit to provide livestock animal care for at least four years.

The loan repayment program is designed to address the shortage of vets to treat cattle, sheep, goats and poultry, while supporting New Mexican agriculture in rural, frontier and tribal communities.
