The average debtor in the UK owes £16,753, according to figures from PayPlan.
The company, which offers free debt advice, also revealed that borrowers in Essex owe the most with an average balance of £18,508, according to its customer research.
Debtors in Cambridge and Belfast follow close behind in the list of debt hotspots, each owing an average of £18,463 and £17,114 respectively.

In addition the number of people falling into debt for a second time has more than tripled in the last year, from 2.6 per cent to 11.1 per cent, according to PayPlan’s figures.
