The National Union of Students (NUS) has slammed a federal government proposal which could mean university students who flunk half of their first-year courses lose financial support, in a bid to curb soaring HELP debts.
Under the proposal, a student who fails half of their first eight subjects in a degree would lose access to a government-subsidised place and HELP loans.
However, higher education providers would have discretion if a students performance was affected by exceptional circumstances.
Low completion rates wont be transferred if a student changes course.
NUS National President Molly Willmott said the union was appalled by the announcement, which was sold as a way to promote and incentivise success.
