LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a second round of medical debt forgiveness Monday, eliminating more than $74 million in debt for nearly 72,000 Michigan residents.
The latest relief effort brings the total amount of medical debt forgiven through the state’s partnership with Undue Medical Debt to more than $218 million. In July 2025, the state announced its first round of debt relief, which erased more than $144 million in medical debt for nearly 210,000 Michiganders.
Michigan officials said the program aims to reduce the financial burden of medical expenses and help residents avoid delaying or skipping health care because of cost concerns.
