In Wirral, 509 residents entered the Breathing Space scheme in 2025, according to official figures.
The scheme, also known as the Debt Respite Scheme, offers individuals 60 days of legal protection from creditors, including a pause on interest, fees, and enforcement action.
It is designed to give people time to access free debt advice and put together a manageable repayment plan.
Jack Sporcic, a debt adviser from National Debtline, said: “Behind every Breathing Space application is someone trying to find a way to cope.
