Hindustan Dorr-Oliver owes banks over Rs1,400 crore, as of March 2017.

Mumbai: Eight Capital Group and Centrum Capital Ltd are in a race to pick up a majority stake in Hindustan Dorr-Oliver Ltd (HDO), which is currently facing corporate insolvency proceedings, two people familiar with the development said.

Debt-laden IVRCL Ltd, in which banks own a majority stake post conversion of a part of their debt into equity via strategic debt restructuring (SDR), has a 55% stake in HDO.

While Eight Capital has already submitted its expression of interest (EoI), Centrum has been working on it and is likely to submit the same soon, one of the two people cited above said.

HDO, a leading engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) player in the past, …

NEW DELHI: The government is looking at a proposal to give higher priority to the claims of small operational creditors in cases of liquidation under the bankruptcy code, an official said.

This comes after representations that small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are suppliers of goods or services to a defaulting company, face huge losses during bankruptcy proceedings, pushing them towards bankruptcy in some cases and also leading to job losses for those employed with them.

“In a few cases which are presently under liquidation, it has been pointed out that SMEs face the brunt, putting them under severe stress,” said the government official cited earlier. “We are examining the issue,” the person said.

Under the re…

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Police are investigating the slaying of a man found shot at an Alabama apartment complex.

Birmingham police say officers were called Sunday evening to the HighPointe Apartments complex. The victim was found shot in one of the apartments.

Al.com reports that police say their preliminary investigation shows the slaying may have results from an argument over a gambling debt or a dice game.

Police have not released the name of the victim.

A woman’s decomposing body was found in October in a wooded area at the same apartment complex. The woman was identified as 34-year-old Ieasha Shakinna Abrams, but th…

DUBAI (Reuters) A detained Saudi billionaire who led the collapsed Saad Group is seeking to repay part of a multi-billion dollar debt to creditors under a deal that could allow his release, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Reemas Group, a financial consultancy hired by Saad Group, has outlined a proposed settlement covering $4 billion in debt. In an email sent by Reemas to creditors, of copy of which Reuters has obtained, it s…

MUMBAI: Equipment maker Ericsson has roped in senior counsel Darius Khambata to represent it in its insolvency petition against Reliance Communication (RCom) at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

Khambata is also representing China Development Bank (CDB) in its insolvency plea against the Anil Ambani owned company to recover dues worth $1.78 billion (Rs 11,460 crore). The Bombay High Court lawyer said there was no intent to merge the cases at the moment, but “that would eventually happen once any of the insolvency petitions was admitted”.

The acceptance of insolvency will also supersede the strategic debt restructuring being carried out by RCom’s domestic lenders, he said. The insolvency petitions against RCom and i…

Almost $13 trillion. Thats the eye-popping figure for total household debt as of September 30, 2017, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. To put that in perspective, the former record was set in the first quarter of 2008, right before the onset of the financial crisis. Credit card debt, auto loan debt, student loan debt and mortgage debt are all on the rise (and while home equity loans and lines of credit decreased slightly, borrowing is projected to ramp up significantly in the next few years to come).

If youre one of the many resolving to get a handle on your debt in 2018, starting now could give you a significant head start. The good news: You don’t have to do it the old-fashioned way. Here are some tech tools to help yo…

Its highly unlikely that, in the two weeks before Christmas, the executive team at Toys R Us can do much to goose the bankrupt companys sales. The merchandise has been bought, the advertising circulars have been printed, the commercials filmed. The hard work of selling is now up to the front-line employees who, according to Glassdoors estimates, are making about $35,000 a year.

Yet its on behalf of just 17 senior executives that the company has successfully lobbied a US bankruptcy judge to approve as much as $21 million in bonuses, arguing that the executives need the incentive to get shoppers to buy as much as they can.

Where to start?

The goal of any retailer is to get shoppers to buy as much as they can. In poker parlance, those …
