Housing stress has ranked among the biggest problems for Australians calling the National Debt Helpline, as demand for support continues to rise.
Demand for support via the National Debt Helpline has reached a six-year high, with more than 168,000 people reaching out for support during the 2024–25 financial year, making it the free service’s biggest year since 2018–19.
Housing stress, including issues with mortgages, rent, and rates, was among the most common problems for callers to the helpline during the year.

BHOPAL: A 35-year-old peon with the Sports and Youth Welfare Department allegedly committed suicide by inhaling LPG gas at his rented home in Harda on Saturday night. Police suspect he was under heavy debt linked to online gaming.The deceased, Laxminarayan Kewat, was found around 9.30 pm with a domestic cylinder placed beside him, its regulator open and the rubber pipe in his mouth. Police said the body had stiffened from the strong effect of the gas. Latest figures from the Insolvency Service have shown that the number of registered business insolvencies in England and Wales decreased by 8.4% to a total of 2,043 in June compared to May 2025’s total of 2,230, and decreased by 15.9% compared to June 2024’s figure of 2,430.
The business insolvencies consisted of 332 compulsory liquidations, 1,585 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs), 111 administrations and 15 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs). There were no receivership appointments.

Charges of fraud and theft against longtime NBA player Marcus Morris were dismissed Wednesday after he paid off his debts to two Las Vegas casinos, according to Caroline Bleakley of television station KLAS.
To obtain a line of credit for gambling purposes, Morris wrote checks totaling $265K to the casinos in 2024. He was arrested last month at a South Florida airport because he didn’t have sufficient funds in his bank account to cover the checks.
