One in three people has been forced to borrow money from family or friends to help them with essential bills or debt repayments.
The main reason people needed financial help was for food, followed by assistance with a car repair bill or utility bill, according to research from Equifax.
Loans were also taken to help pay off debt such as mortgage repayments, rent arrears and credit cards.
The findings follow figures last week from the TUC and Unison revealing that millions of households are struggling as the total unsecured debt (which excludes mortgages) rose by £48billion between 2012 and 2015 to reach a staggering £353billion.
