A worker who grew up in poverty is facing a brutal choice: keep paying credit card companies or put food on the table.
Choosing survival over a credit score, the worker stopped paying their bills entirely just to afford groceries.
“I am financially irresponsible,” the debt holder wrote on Reddit’s r/povertyfinance forum. “I grew up dirt poor. I’ve always been bad with money.”
The person described a toxic cycle of making minimum payments that only went toward horrific interest rates rather than lowering principal balances. Feeling crushed by the mounting liabilities, the worker decided to default on the accounts.
“Recently I just said screw it. I stopped paying them. … It felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders.”
