Money advice service said some people should be budgeting for next festive season
The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (Mabs) said 1,554 people sought help in person from specialist debt advisers in January, a 16pc rise from the same period last year, when 1,338 people came forward for help.
Separately, the registered charity received 1,624 calls to its helpline last month, up from 1,499, or an 8pc rise, year on year.
The cost-of-living crisis, rising rental arrears and the increased use of “buy now, pay later schemes” over the festive season were cited by the nationwide debt support service as key drivers behind the spike in numbers turning to them for help.
